PWAs emerged from battles lost, lessons learned, and the web being left behind. Alex Russell and Frances Berriman have been sketching ways to keep the web in the game for a decade, and PWAs are a serious play. They’ll take a retrospective look at what led to the birth of PWAs, where they’ve been successful, and what challenges still face the web.

Thanks to recent advancements in display technologies, we now witness devices with either a flexible bendable screen or two screens, also known as dual-screen devices, come to the market en masse. This opens a door for new exciting use-cases but also sets novel requirements for apps that need to be written with this new form factor in mind. The web has always been good at adapting to different screen sizes and most web sites are now responsible by default. But how can the web take advantage of multiple screens when there may be a hinge of a varying width in between the two screens? In this talk we look at some of the new devices and design patterns and introduce new upcoming web standards that allow you to write web apps that adapt to different configurations of a viewport split across a visible or invisible hinge, as well as show a lot of cool demos!

Though the PWABuilder OSS project, we’ll see how we’re helping developers to build their PWAs and distribute them on all platforms & devices. Indeed, we recently changed our directions & strategy to focus our energy on features to build native app-like PWA. For that, we’re shipping specific web components such as the <pwa-install />, working with Google on packaging a PWA for the Play Store or exposing a service to implement & test quickly push notifications. Via several demonstrations, we’ll see also the incredible potential of a PWA including reaching a new generation of dual screens devices!

Progressive web apps gain some popularity recently in order to bring a native app-like experience into the browser and Samsung Internet has been an early pioneer with PWA features such as the install button on the URL bar. Last year we launched a way to give more visibility into Progressive Web Apps trialing publishing them to the Galaxy Store in the US. So whats next? Is the process of investing a PWA worth it? And above all, how can developers take advantage of this technology? During this talk we are gonna analyze how PWA had an impact into our browser and define some concepts to establish a roadmap for the future status of PWAs.

Progressive Web Apps are today installable on iOS, iPadOS, kaiOS, and all desktop OS’s with Chrome and Edge, but is your PWA ready for those platforms? Most devs were optimizing their PWAs to run smoothly on Android, and these new platforms added some new challenges for our code and user experience that we need to manage.

In this session, we’ll see current compatibility and challenges your web app might have on these new platforms, including enterprise distribution, multi-window support, JavaScript and app lifecycle, integration with the platforms, app store support, APIs, authentication and installation promotion. We will talk about unique abilities on these platforms that require special attention for a better UX. We won’t forget Android, talking about the forgotten browsers and how they are treating PWAs in 2020.
